The N°15 Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 (Black Falcon) of Edwards/Bleekemolen/Metzger/Schall profited from the fact that the N°11 Porsche/Michelin stayed in its pits all morning to improve the provisional pole-winning time. The battle for first place on Saturday’s grid will be decided by this evening’s SuperQualifying session which will see only the 40 best-placed cars take part.

The Manthey Racing Porsche 997 GT3 R of Lieb/Dumas/Luhr/Lietz hit the ground running to record the best time early in Thursday evening’s qualifying session. The N°26 Audi R8 LMS (Mamerow Racing) of Mamerow/Abt/Ammermuller/Hahne was second fastest. Qualifying continues this morning at 9:35am.

The fastest time in free practice was posted by the N°27 Porsche/Michelin (Timbuli Racing) which was four seconds quicker than the N°2 Audi/Michelin (2nd, Phoenix Racing). The top 10 were covered by less than eight seconds.

The 40th Nürburgring 24 Hours starts at 4pm on Saturday, May 19. An estimated 250,000 spectators are expected to watch a field of some 200 cars round the 25.378km ‘Nordschleife’.

Former Peugeot driver Franck Montagny has been recruited by Level 5 Motorsports for the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours. He is driving the team’s HPD-ARX03b at Laguna Seca this weekend.

Most of the LMP1 remained in Belgium after the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps for a test session to prepare for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the highlight of the new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Japan’s Hiroaki Ishiura, who was to have shared the N°8 Toyota TS030 Hybrid at Le Mans in June with Davidson and Buemi, will now not take part in the race.
