The ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) has released a statement confirming the date of next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours which will be the 80th edition of the famous race. Coincidentally, another legendary event, the Rallye Monte-Carlo, will also be organised for the 80th time next season…
The 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours, which will be a qualifying round of the new World Endurance Championship, will start at 3pm on Saturday, June 16, a week after this year’s slot. The ACO says that this is to take into account the sporting and political calendar. Meanwhile, the official Test Day, which took place towards the end of April in 2011, will be organised two weeks before the 2012 race, on Sunday, June 3.
The ACO explains that a six-week interval between the test and the race in 2011 was justified by the introduction of new LMP1 and LMP2 prototypes. In 2012, the interval will be shortened to two weeks to allow teams to save money by not having to dismantle their facilities between their two visits to Le Mans.
The inaugural Le Mans 24 Hours in 1923 was won by the MICHELIN-equipped Chenard&Walcker Sport of André Lagache and René Léonard.
