Of the 124 American Le Mans Series races that have been organised since the championship’s creation in 1999, this goes down as the smallest ever winning margin. After four hours of racing round the fast venue in the state of Wisconsin, Klaus Graf and the Muscle Milk Lola-Aston Martin crossed the line exactly 0.112s before Guy Smith in the Lola-Mazda!
“The team told me to save fuel AND push, and it’s not easy to do the two at the same time. But it worked out fine in the end,” beamed Graf after the race. “It was basically a four-hour sprint and today’s win is sweet revenge for the Muscle Milk team which was beaten during the last lap at the very same circuit last year…”
The N°6 Lola-Aston Martin also topped the MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge order for the fifth time in a row.
The GT class saw the spoils go to Risi Competizione’s Ferrari 458/MICHELIN, the ideal way to celebrate the team’s first ALMS outing of 2011. Jaime Melo enjoyed a comfortable margin over the N°55 BMW with an hour remaining, but a safety car incident reduced that lead to nothing. The BMW actually moved ahead when the racing re-started, but the Ferrari – which was fast all weekend – regained control to beat the two factory BMWs and the Porsche of the defending champions, Bergmeister and Long.
The next round will take teams to Baltimore at the beginning of September.
