Summer in North America

During the summer months, it’s on the western side of the Atlantic that all the endurance racing action is happening. No fewer than five rounds of the American Le Mans Series are scheduled between the beginning of July and early September. The next clash will be in Canada, at Mosport, Ontario.

ALMS action resumed at the beginning of July at Lime Rock Park (Connecticut) where the Dyson/Smith Lola-Mazda profited from a tangle between the Muscle Milk Aston Martin and a GTC runner to take the win. The team rounded off the weekend with the fastest race lap and a remarkable stint by Guy Smith. Smith and Dyson top the provisional standings with a score 66 points, ahead of Graf/Luhr (36).

Lime Rock Park 2011In the GT class, the BMW M3 of Hand/Müller followed up its two wins at the beginning of the season with a third victory ahead of the Flying Lizard (Bergmeister/Long) and Falken (Henzler/Sellers) Porsches. Müller and Hand lead the championship with a score of 70 points, while Gavin/Magnussen (37) are third.

The race was marred by a tangle involving the two factory Corvettes, a BMW M3 and the Extreme Speed Ferrari 458 just minutes after the start. The MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge was won by the Robertson Ford GT which finished on the LM GTE Am podium at Le Mans in June.

A field of 35 cars is expected at Mosport, the fastest venue of the season. The entry features four LMP1 prototypes (two Dyson Lola-Mazdas, the Muscle Milk Aston Martin and the Autocon Lola-AER) plus the two Level 5 Motorsport LMP2 Lolas. The GT grid will star 17 cars, most of which will be out to beat the BMWs. The Canadian round will also see the return of the Panoz Abruzzi.

After Mosport, the ALMS runners will travel to Mid-Ohio (August 5-6), Road America (August 18-20) and Baltimore (September 2-3).
