Night-time has now fallen over the Belgian Ardennes and the race has been marked by a series of frequent rain showers since the start. At the six-hour mark, the leaderboard was topped by the N°79 BMW of Adorf/Werner/Müller, with the N°23 BMS Scuderia Italia Porsche of Bergmeister/Dumas/Ragginger/Henzler following in second spot.
After qualifying on pole position in the hands of Gimmi Bruni, the N°2 AF Corse/Vitaphone Ferrari (Bruni/Longin/Van de Poele/Vilander) emerged in front for the first hour before being forced to make an unscheduled pit-stop to change a broken rim following a tangle with another car. The incident handed control to the factory BMWs, while the Italian car slipped back two laps to sixth spot.
With five-and-a-half hours completed, the two BMWs led before the N°78 car (Alzen/Müller/Lamy) was slowed by an engine misfire. At the six-hour mark, that left the N°79 BMW in front ahead of the N°23 BMS Porsche which has slowly but surely made its way up to the top of the order. The N°16 Imsa-Performance (Pilet/Long/Lietz/Narac) and the N°13 Prospeed Competition (Westbrook/Lieb/Hozler/Goosens) Porsches currently follow in third and fourth places, while the N°50 Audi of Rockenfeller/Kumpen/Fassler/Luhr makes it an all-German top-five with three-quarters of the race remaining.
